In Bloody Jews Josephine Gillan plays the part of Esther who has two children and in a long term arranged marriage. In her late twenties her desire for freedom is conveyed via the richness of her long flaming red hair which she has to hide sice her marriage. The context is complex as both women have been groomed for religious life. The desire for freedom is portrayed through their actions & nuances. The constant religious restraints are explored via the Jewish Laws of sexual preparation and their performance and obligation to what is considered female purity. However the real life story of Josephine whose recently been featured in the newspapers such as Mail on Sunday, The Sun where Mikvah/Bloody Jews has been featured too, in 2016 where sexual enslavement and sexual obligation through prostitution have featured heavily in her past & are now experiences to draw on in Josephines acting career.

In Bloody Jews Milli plays the part of a young woman on the day of her arranged marriage at the spiritual baths preparing for her wedding night. This challenging dramatic role allows Milli to draw on her own experiences as a young Jewish woman who has lived with Orthodox Jewish women, when she lived in a Jewish women's Refuge. that experience was in fact developed into a short documentary (see www.filmgold.wix.com/reallives) award winning film at the Open Door Festival.
Using Drama to portray the 'Laws of Niddah' (which is the female menstrual cycle) is rarely discussed & creates a forum whereby this sensitive subject matter can be conveyed in an interesting informative way to a wide demographic achieving a platform for self awareness & women's phisiology for both men and women, & what that means in terms of jewish ideology.
Bloody Jews produced by reallives & michaelgarsin & both companies have an interesting crew. Writer/directer Alicia Rose was herself once an Orthodox Jew & studied Jewish Philosophy for two years in Israel. The experiences have been conveyed through moving
image/photography and various installations that have been awarded & exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. Tate modern, film Festivals and European exhibitions.
